On October 12, a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Crete – two weeks after another earthquake killed a man on the Greek island and damaged hundreds of buildings.

A tsunami warning was issued and witnesses reported feeling a “massive shake” at 12:24 local time (9:24 GMT) with houses shaking side by side after the earthquake struck 50 kilometers southeast of the port city from Sitia.

A church collapsed and officials reported landslides as seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos predicted small waves on the south coast and urged people to move away from the shores.

Magnitude 4.1 and 4.5 earthquakes – believed to be aftershocks – occurred minutes later, the Geodynamic Institute of Athens said.

The earthquake reportedly struck 170 km east of Heraklion, the capital of Crete, the EMSC said in a message on Twitter.
