Ghost of Tsushima has made publishers more open to games about Japan’s history

There was once a time when games based on Japanese history didn’t appeal to publishers, but that all seems to have changed with the release of Ghost of Tsushima. Tenchu ​​creator Takuma Endo explained in an interview how Sucker Punch’s game not only proved that Japanese history still had an audience, but also made it popular again.

Ghost of Tsushima revived Japanese story games

There was a time when publishers “weren’t interested in dealing with games that dealt with Japanese history or really Japanese settings as a subject matter,” Endo explained in an interview with Metro. This meant that the developers didn’t feel capable of making these games, and they never really hit the market outside of Japan. However, Ghost of Tsushima changed all that when it was released to excellent reviews from gamers and critics:

It really had a big impact in Japan, for the developers, showing them that it was still viable. Endo believes the reason Ghost of Tsushima was so successful was because of its subject matter. The game has a setting and time period that wasn’t “particularly well known” and it “brought to light something that isn’t just a Japanese setting, but it’s a very specific time and place in Japan. ‘Japanese history’. This “really resonated with a lot of developers”. This obviously resonated very well with gamers too, given that the game has multiplayer and campaign DLC.
