Creators of “Sable” Conceive a Quiet World in New Video Game

The open world adventure game “Sable” may have a basic mission for players to follow, but its creators have designed its beautiful and calm world to always have unique surprises in store depending on how you play.

The details: “Sable” is the story of a young woman leaving her small village as part of a rite of passage to find the mask that suits her best.

  • It’s the first game from Shedworks, the studio founded by duo Gregorios Kythreotis and Daniel Fineberg, who actually started working in a shed.

  • It is available for Windows, Xbox Series X / S, and Xbox One.

  • The game has no combat, but takes place through exploration and puzzles. Her world is large, beautiful, and puts curiosity at the forefront of her adventure as players can travel to anything they see.

  • “You try to create moments, but you can never count on the player who lives every moment in a game like this,” Kythreotis told Axios. “It’s a completely free form … you just hope the layering will create opportunities for those [special moments] to arrive.”

When designing “Sable”, Kythreotis – who has an architectural background – said he would build the basic blocks of the game world while hiding them in Fineberg, to get an authentic reaction.

  • “But once I do that once, I can’t do it anymore,” he said. “And then I have to find a new person, to get that fresh first impression.”

  • Fineberg, for his part, says he’s “familiarized enough” with Kythreotis’ tricks – stories in the form of hanging vines or a bird that might grab the player’s attention.

And after: The founders of Shedworks say that while they work on bugs and other updates for “Sable,” they’ll eventually need a break before diving into a new title.

A highlight of “Sable” is his music, a mix of ambient tracks and vocals by artist Michelle Zauner, also known as Japanese Breakfast.

  • According to Daniel Fineberg, involving Zauner in the project was easier than expected: “I just sent him a DM on Twitter.”

  • Fineberg spent a lot of time in 2017 listening to the artist’s latest album, “Soft Sounds From Another Planet,” which prompted him to reach out.

His involvement was not totally out of left field; Zauner has dived into video games before, with projects like a browser-based RPG that accompanied “Soft Sounds from Another Planet” and a Simlish cover of one of his songs.

  • Fineberg and Kythreotis met Zauner at a pub in London to talk and immediately hit it off.

  • “I don’t know if you could do it more,” says Kythreotis of DMing.
