While this obscure GameCube game tends to be overlooked and overshadowed my modern Poke-epics, the 2004s Coliseum was a bit ahead of its time. Often regarded as a simple Pokémon Stadium Following, this title is inspired by this formula while expanding the gameplay a little.

In fact, it adds a story mode that spans two dozen hours; which makes it one of the most content-rich games on the console. Players will explore the region of Orre, fighting and rescuing obscured “Shadow Pokemon” as they travel. Game Freak had a difficult task ahead of them for their Pokemon debut on GBA. Not only did they seek to recover Pokemonmajesty and charm of a new generation of consoles, but they had to at least match the recent classics that were Gold, silver and crystal. Much to the relief of most fans, they delivered this memorable 2002 RPG, which featured a third generation of Pokemon for the first time in all its glory.

At the same time, those bells and whistles are quite subtle, allowing gameplay to take center stage.

In addition to the lush Japanese-inspired region of Sinnoh, the game features 107 awesome new monsters, combat upgrades, and online play, the latter adding much more addicting gameplay to this 40-hour epic.

A little like Crystal and Red Light / Leaf Green years before, Pokémon Platinum takes inspiration from an established classic and adds more depth and appeal; with a neat presentation and additional features.

Despite being only two years apart, Game Freak manages to attract new players and fans from Diamond / Pearl the same with new inclusions. Items like the Wi-Fi Plaza minigame, Anonymous Online Exchanges, Recordable Battles, and Battle Frontier give vets a reason to come back. The flagship add-on, however, has to be the twisted variant of Sinnoh known as Distortion World, which adds tons of unique and trippy content.

  • It’s the first game from Shedworks, the studio founded by duo Gregorios Kythreotis and Daniel Fineberg, who actually started working in a shed.

  • It is available for Windows, Xbox Series X / S, and Xbox One.

  • The game has no combat, but takes place through exploration and puzzles. Her world is large, beautiful, and puts curiosity at the forefront of her adventure as players can travel to anything they see.

A highlight of “Sable” is his music, a mix of ambient tracks and vocals by artist Michelle Zauner, also known as Japanese Breakfast.

  • According to Daniel Fineberg, involving Zauner in the project was easier than expected: “I just sent him a DM on Twitter.”

Eastward follows John, a silent miner who uses a frying pan for both cooking and hitting people, and Sam, a young girl with white hair (that’s how you know she’s mysterious). The two develop a father-daughter-type relationship as they make a living in the underground city of Potcrock Isle, but when exiled to the wastelands of the surface world, they discover that things on top aren’t what they seemed. It takes a bit of a while to start, but really starts to take off when you exit the first area and deeper mysteries are introduced.

The puzzles are a lot like Zelda’s: place weights on the platforms to keep the doors open, throw bombs through spaces, separate characters to fight their way through each other, and find a balance between being difficult without being too frustrating. Some sections seem a bit repetitive, and one part in particular where you have to solve puzzles at high speed to avoid being consumed by a spreading miasma made me step away for a second to calm down. It’s not that the puzzles themselves are difficult, but there isn’t enough time to assess and complete them before you die. The tension has been ruined by repetition and frustration, but this sort of thing is thankfully rare in Eastward.

The monsters are quite cute, like waddling mushrooms and bomb-spitting duck plants, and can usually be put down with a few pot shots. Bosses all have some sort of trick to figure out first – to get them out of their hiding place or to have them stand still so you can give them a good pounding. John’s trusty frying pan has a satisfying result snap but can be difficult to aim, and switching between that and the pistol can slow you down, which has led me to let my guard down more often than I would like to admit. However, swapping between John and Sam to use his energy blasts is incredibly quick and helps keep things fresh.

Where Eastward really excels is its atmosphere. It sort of straddles that boundary between a feel that is both retro in its pixels and modern with its details and lighting. The town of New Dam is a highlight with Japanese-style houses and alleys all crowded together but still teeming with potted plants and power lines. Other areas are troubling, and that unease overwhelms you as you sink in. As you explore a beautiful forest, the next robotic eyes follow your every move. Eastward also does fun things with the vibration settings on the controllers, mimicking the feeling of walking on train tracks or the feeling of a heartbeat in tense moments.

The music stuck with me too, even after I stopped playing. It’s a chiptune love letter to ’90s games that will undoubtedly end up in many “lofi chill beats to study to” playlists. The design of the text is also fantastic: the speech bubbles shake in surprise or stir slowly during moments of tension. It’s a masterclass on how to give personality to characters without dubbing.

Eastward is full of unique characters, and even the NPCs who just go about their business shine. The downside is that when everyone in the room is weird and bonkers, no one really stands out. You feel like you are struck by a wall of constant chatter where it is difficult to say what is important because everything is taken into account. Plus, getting to really know certain characters just so they’re never mentioned again means it becomes hard to feel attached to anyone.

Relatively early on, John attracts an admirer called Uva, and the romantic element is sudden and simplistic, with a bunch of grannies getting involved, each needing to have their own ‘piece’ as part of the comedy. They’re unnecessary and bossy – without all of them the story would turn out a bit better. It’s a shame because individually the actors are all brilliant, but they have to compete with each other to get your attention. John’s stoic firmness stands out because he’s the only one who never speaks.

Along with the main story, terminals let you play an old-school 8-bit RPG called “Earthborn” that features classic turn-based combat like in the early Dragon Quest games. It’s surprisingly deep, and hearing various characters rave about it during your journey makes the world Sam and John explore all the more real. Cooking and finding new recipes for crafting healing items is another fun distraction and features a beautiful bouncy animation that’s as cheerful as that of Breath of the Wild. However, there isn’t enough space in your backpack to store your cooked meals or enough frying pans to cook, making it difficult to heal in dungeons.

For over 20 years, Kagen Sound has been perfecting the nuances of some of the world’s most confusing objects.


Kagen Sound’s 600-square-foot cabin sits in the backyard of his quiet townhouse in City Park West. A powerful aroma of various woods – Bastogne walnut and Canadian maple – persists in the humidity controlled environment. The space is the sacred church of revelry in Sound, his workshop. And for over a decade, this is where the Denver native has been crafting nuanced puzzle boxes.

Unlike puzzles, Sound’s mechanical puzzles feature one or more moving parts that require logic and reasoning to open, which he likens to modular origami. He likens the resolve of one of his creations to how one domino has to tumble online, hitting the next one to reach the end. Each piece of its 3D objects must move along a certain path in a certain sequence to reveal the interior. To date, he has created over 100 original concepts that have been produced by the thousands, each selling for hundreds of dollars on various sites including his own, some selling very quickly and winning international awards. (His furniture with discoverable hidden compartments sells for over $ 50,000.)

“There are many reasons why a puzzle is cool. But for me, a hollow and useful implication of a container box is really fun, ”he says. “I clung to this concept. There is a story of various puzzle containers throughout history, including safes, which are more of a safety device. But what I’m doing is something more fun and logical, something you could understand.

Depending on the difficulty, these wooden works of art require a great amount of isolation to understand. It’s no wonder then that sales of puzzles exploded in the first year of the pandemic. German game publisher Ravensburger saw a 370% year-over-year increase in US puzzle sales in 2020. Meanwhile, YouTube influencer and famous Canada-based puzzle collector, Chris Ramsay has seen his subscriber list nearly double to five million in the past 18 months. He solved Sound’s aptly named “Maze Box”, where players guide a hidden pin through a circular metal maze on the box cover.

Sample designs hang on metal clips above his workbench – alien sketches of patterns of squares, dots, arrows, numbers. Looking at it, you see that it is a language in its own right. These puzzle concepts may one day manifest or combine into a single puzzle or be discarded altogether. “I have to build these ideas,” he says. ” There are no words. … I have to get them out of my head, and the wood is, in a way, attractive. It is pleasant to the touch.

Take, for example, his latest creation, the geometric prototype sitting on his workbench. The new box is a rhombic triacontahedron, that is, a 30-sided convex polyhedron shape. It is a super complex object that will make your inner child who hates maths cry. “A lot of people don’t see this every day,” says Sound. (Um, yes, that’s correct.) It’s a structure with no right angles and it serves as the basis for its new sliding puzzle where each of the 30 panels is covered with a sliding piece of wood. Each must be slid in a certain order and in a certain direction for the box to open.

The triacontahedron is something players get lost in, a sort of mental maze that has largely drawn Sound to puzzles in the first place. “It was a cathartic thing, and I was hiding in that experience,” he says of his childhood. “I think I was calming down. It was a safe place that I had discovered. A place to live.

The sound grew in Denver in the 1980s when there was what he calls a “maze craze,” with puzzle books published regularly. From the first year, he started to create his own mazes. Over time, the designs became more elaborate. The repetition of the trade was attractive. He’s done a lot of these projects at his family’s dining room table, where he says his family never really sat together. Considering the household energy, labyrinths were a form of escape. “It was a refuge from the other chaotic elements that can be found in many different households.”

This quiet cave stayed with him throughout his childhood. “I took it with me,” he says. “The flip side is that it could be isolating. There’s the balance between safety and crafting and catharsis – and healing from “crafting” – but you can also isolate yourself. So, I have to be proactive to get out of it. You know, show up for my [two-year-old] girl, ”he laughs. “Go out and have a beer with someone. “

Finding other people who relate to crafts is difficult. But the bonds in these extremely small circles can be strong. A highlight of his career was the design of the “Tornado Box”, a collaborative effort with Japanese master craftsman Akio Kamei, who is part of the famous secret (albeit niche) entity known as the Karakuri Creation Group. . Kamei puzzle boxes range from stylish to playful. (One of those “boxes” looks like a bowl of miso soup.) The “very rewarding” collaborative effort illustrates the relationship abroad: two halves of a box come together to create a puzzle. Each component has its artist badges etched into the wood. In the end, only 31 boxes were made available to a private group.

“There is a fine line between magic and puzzles. And what it does, “Sound said, holding the triacontahedron,” performs magic. He pushes the limits of the material, of the form, of what he can do. The magnificent and curious pieces are carefully organized throughout his workshop. The woods vary in dark and deep hues to the intricate patterns found in nature, such as betel nut. The fruit of the areca palm is a narcotic commonly found in parts of Asia, but when dried and smoothed, black lines stretch around the oval bead. Sound chose to use betel nuts as the legs for a wooden box.

“Most of the time, what I’m trying to present is just something very unusual,” he says. “It’s content. It doesn’t collapse, but it moves in this amazing way and then opens. For me, it’s a magic trick that I create.

Wrapping into motion sequences, the way computer engineers explore ways to store more information on chips, is part of that magic. Sound’s Rune Cube is a good example. The cube has rune shapes on each side and there is a pin in the center of each rune. Players slide each panel along the path of the rune. In the end, the cube opens in six strokes. However, there is a key in the center, allowing players to “reprogram” the puzzle by rearranging the panels. Aligned differently, the puzzle sequence can take up to 115 shots in order to open.

All of this translates into a complex maze in 3D space that could accumulate dust until the solution one day seeps into a player’s subconscious, resulting in that ‘a-ha’ moment. “It’s like creating a good riddle or a joke, in a way,” Sound explains. “It’s the punchline. You create that moment in work and you want people to find it.

Puzzle boxes can be as artistic an expression as, say, a painting by Mark Rothko or a poem by Maya Angelou. Everything is designed in isolation to help others find inspiration. “When you only find a few things that all work together to create a whole lot of chaos, and there are only a few moving parts, that’s great,” Sound says. “I don’t know why I like it. It doesn’t sound difficult, but when you start to shake things up there’s a lot going on there. “

Ib is a sort of spiritual successor to the famous Yume Nikki, the title that kicked off a renaissance of RPG Maker horror titles in Japanese hobbyist game development circles. Yume NikkiThe overt surrealism and opaque goals of it’s inspired many to develop similar titles, but in several cases these ramifications leaned further into explicit horror than their predecessor.

Ib is such an example and is one of the best full-fledged RPG Maker horror games. While visiting an art museum, the player suddenly finds themselves swept away by a distorted mirror version of their surroundings. Their task is then to escape this nightmare world, solve puzzles and avoid enemies along the way.

9 Start investigation?

The premise behind Start investigation? is exceedingly simple. The player sits at his in-game laptop, unable to move, and answers a series of simple yes or no questions in a seemingly innocuous poll. It might not sound like too bad, but the developer of this title was able to extend this simple concept to some terrifying conclusions.

This is one of those games that wants to break the line between play and reality, which makes scares all the more effective. Not content with letting the horror linger at the edge of its gaming window, Start investigation? is sure to have players checking over their shoulders in real life as often as they do in the game.

8 Cry of fear

Cry of fear is a legend in Half-life modding circles and a classic PC horror release that all gamers must try. As one of the many hit titles inspired by the silent Hill series, Cry of fear follows his protagonist as he slowly loses his mind. You never clearly know what’s real and what isn’t, which seriously increases the tension.

It focuses more on combat than some of the other entries in the genre, but players would do well not to get lulled into being armed into a false sense of security. The enemies in this game are utterly nightmarish, and facing them, armed or not, is always a terrifying affair.

7 The house in the woods

Fans of Witch Blair look no further, this game, clearly inspired by the classic horror film, is perhaps the clearest reinterpretation of the film’s grainy and found vibe in a video game. True to its inspiration, this game plunges players into the midst of terribly dark, possibly haunted woods.

The low-poly aesthetic does wonders for the gaming atmosphere, capturing the low-budget charm of Witch Blair. The sound design here is also particularly noteworthy, supporting the terrifying vibe with well-timed musical beats and otherworldly noises.

6 Slender: the eight pages

Almost anyone interested in horror games, or perhaps a passing familiarity with online culture around 2012, will have heard of the viral sensation. Slender: the eight pages. This game was everywhere back then, catapulting its titular monster, Slenderman, into pop culture stardom for its fifteen minutes of fame.

Behind the memes, streamers, and hapless Hollywood reinterpretations, however, lies a competent little horror game. It’s a simple premise – browse through these creepy woods and find the eight pages before Slenderman catches you. However, the game is extremely effective in cultivating the sensation of being watched; it always feels like he’s out there, just out of sight.

5 Spooky Jump Fear Mansion

Remember that a jump is scary Dead space 2 where a cardboard cutout of a cartoon sun falls right in front of Isaac’s face? Spooky Jump Fear Mansion is kind of like that, but spans an entire short but sweet love letter to the horror game as a genre. Through the thousand halls of terror of this charming mansion, pretty cardboard cutouts spring up in front of the player’s face, sure to make anyone feel silly for being scared.

Don’t go thinking that this is a game even spooky cats can enjoy, though – it’s not for the faint of heart. Designed to lull players into a false sense of security, the spooky but ultimately charming jumps betray a much more sinister climax. Those who dare to brave the 1000 Chambers of Terror will not be disappointed.

4 Doki Doki Literature Club

In case there is someone who has not been completely spoiled as to Doki Doki Literature Clubthe true nature of – stop reading this entry now and play the game. It’s a title best to experiment with with as little contextual information as possible, in order to keep its many baffling twists in mind new players.

Spoilers and viral success aside, Doki Doki Literature Club remains one of the most successful examples of shattering fourth wall horror on the market. Seeing the game collapse on itself as the story progresses is deeply unsettling, and there are some truly shocking fears behind the game’s disarming presentation.

3 SCP: Containment Breach

Containment violation remains one of the most terrifying video games to endure the SCP coat. Based on the online horror writing project, SCP, Containment violation sees the player take on the role of a humble Class D test subject when everything goes terribly wrong in the containment facility.

The highlight of the game is its faithful interpretation of several of the most famous entities of the SCP Project. For example, an innovative “blink” mechanism is used to great effect, giving players a counter indicating how long they can avoid looking away from SCP-173.

2 Ie No Majou

Another classic RPG Creator horror title, Ie no Majou (Where, The witch’s house) is a great dark horror game that sees players solve assorted environmental puzzles as they attempt to escape a spooky haunted mansion. Unraveling the mysteries of the house while trying to stay alive is a haunting moment, as are the many horror-themed puzzles.

Beneath the low-budget exterior and straightforward premise, however, lies a surprisingly detailed story that fuels the game’s multiple endings. Some of those endings hit pretty hard, both as emotional beats and scares, so it’s better to enter Ie no Majou as preserved as possible.

1 No player online

Anyone who has played a dead or dying MMO, or logged into a Gmod server, will be able to explain the acute concern that accompanies living in an abandoned virtual space that should be populated. What sort of things happened here? Where did everyone go? What if there was still something there?

No player Online is a short, sweet horror game built exactly around this feeling of anxiety. The player logs into an empty flag capture server in a long dead shooter and embarks on exploring the sorry map. It soon becomes clear, however, that there is something else online.

She set out on her own to find the cause of the damage to the wildlife, and our hero must solve puzzles across a diverse landscape in order to find her and aid her in her quest.

The journey is divided into ten chapters with distinct landscapes and animals within, ranging from crumbling citadels, scorching deserts, swamps, icy tundra and many more. Nine webs of Aiko’s art are hidden in each level for you to find, between solving the many puzzles that hinder your progress to reach the final portal that transports you to the next level.

Using a forced isometric perspective that evokes a host of vintage adventure games dating back to Ant Attack on the ZX Spectrum, our hero’s special power is to manipulate a small selection of blocks, ramps, switches, and bullets in each. “zone” which are all contained on the screen at the same time.

This stand-alone puzzle mechanic allows them to be more accessible for those struggling with something too cerebral (my hand is up), and the learning curve is perfectly judged to introduce new elements and techniques to progress once that. the player is comfortable with the potential Solution. That’s not to say that some aren’t extremely difficult, but a little thought and logic will usually get you through what initially appears to be an obtuse selection of blocks and ramps without tearing your hair out.

Later levels offer the ability to burn wooden structures to reach switches or inaccessible areas, as well as ice levels that allow you to freeze and melt water in the same way. Raising mechanical platforms and using steps and ramps are your only way to climb as you can’t jump, so it often simplifies gameplay and dictates the layout of the levels in a nice and predictable way.

The main drawback is the control system, as the square button was preferred over the cross to select an item you want to move, and on more than one occasion I found myself undoing carefully prepared scaffolding as the button layout was anything but intuitive. Otherwise, there’s not much to fault the gameplay unless you have an aversion to puzzles that gently strain your brain.

Break the fourth wall

As the story progresses, Aiko remains quite evasive but it continues to motivate our hero to find her. The ‘fourth wall’ is soon shattered when the artist’s hands begin to appear with a few still cutscenes that reveal scenes from his life that influence his mental state. These begin to have an effect on his demeanor and the way he treats his characters in the game, similarly turning the story into something more emotional and complicated than it initially seemed. Stepping out of the immersive art style could have ruined the atmosphere (according to the tedious sections of modern-day Assassin’s Creed), but it works pretty well here as a quirky idea to intertwine the artist’s world with folk history.

Of course, Inked’s USPs are the gorgeous line art that not only makes up an incredibly detailed isometric world, but also brings the two protagonists and the animals in their world to life, all of which are wonderfully animated. A subtle watercolor background is used behind the solid scenery and the bustling parts of the world are equal in their exquisite detail to the rest of the characters. Sonically, the appropriate and subtle musical soundtrack is interspersed with lovely organic sound effects that complement the visuals very well. Between scenes, the voiceover of the American narrator is something of an acquired taste but luckily that does not interfere too much with the charming Japanese atmosphere of the story.

Fast on the draw

There is between 4 and 5 hours of gameplay in the story, and the finalists will want to replay the game in order to collect all of the carefully hidden webs in each level. Considering the price of the game, this is a sufficient amount of gameplay for casual gamers who enjoy relatively simple puzzles framed in a sublime hand-drawn world that is worth seeing until the emotional finale.

While the core gameplay doesn’t break new ground and is essentially quite archaic, there is enough originality in the story and in the design to make up for that. As a result, Inked A Tale of Love is a recommended buy for lovers of design, puzzles, and emotional stories.
