Hello again everyone ! It’s me, Helen Eckhard, your host from the Albuquerque Daily. Let’s start this Wednesday off on the right foot, with a quick dive into everything you need to know about what’s happening in the city.

First, today’s weather forecast:

Rather cloudy. High: 94 Low: 70.

Here are the top three stories from today in Albuquerque:

  2. The New Mexico Attorney General’s Office suspects Albuquerque shoplifters are using the city’s public bus system as a mode of transportation to get away. The bureau came to the conclusion after receiving surveillance footage of a group of shoplifters using city buses. The bureau believes the trend started when the city scrapped bus fares earlier this year. (KRQE News 13)
  3. The Albuquerque Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency awarded grants to 15 businesses. The grants are intended to stimulate downtown commercial activity by improving ground floor properties. The grants totaled $500,000. The organization continues to maintain a waiting list for future grants. (Business newspapers)

If the number of concurrent players is anything to say, Wander is on track to become the best indie game released in 2022. BlueTwelve Studio and Annapurna Interactive delivered a stellar delivery of the game’s dystopian setting through the eyes of a furry protagonist, which only helped to he claims to star as the most searched title on Steam. After all is said and done, however, cat enthusiasts who loved Wander might want to look into other games with similar offerings.

WanderThe charming approach to exploration and discovery is one of its biggest selling points, but the whole trip is short. Even if the adorable feline hero doesn’t overstay his welcome, many players would agree that the brevity of the experience leaves a bittersweet desire for continuation. While the game’s ambiguous ending lays the groundwork for a sequel, it might be a while before Annapurna presents any news on that front. In the meantime, the next five games should rekindle that warm, fuzzy feeling gamers had while playing. Wander.

Cat Quest captures the other side of the coin

cat quest and Wander might not have much in common gameplay-wise, but if adventuring as a fearless kitty is up the gamer’s alley, this endearing top-down RPG might just be the ticket. Contrary to Wander, cat quest is inspired by dragon questeven if the gameplay of overworld is more similar to some The Legend of Zelda securities.

As players step into the paws of an anthropomorphic feline who embarks on a quest to rescue his sister in a sprawling open-world kingdom called Felingard, they’ll encounter fearsome enemies, cleverly designed dungeons, and plenty of cute loot. While real-time combat adds a touch of realism to the dynamic experience, customizable gear allows players to change combat styles on the go, which is a neat detail that should appeal to those who have found WanderAction-packed sequences are limiting.

Gato Roboto mixes Mecha with Old School

Although both Wander and Gato Roboto center their story around highly sophisticated robotic lifeforms, their gameplay features couldn’t be further apart. This fast-paced 2D Metroidvania platformer tests player skill and patience with monochromatic visuals and tricky obstacles that might make them repeat the same sequence over and over again.

After players crash-land on a mysterious alien planet, they are tasked with locating and rescuing their owner. While Kiki, the protagonist, is a fairly fragile member of the feline family, the stakes rise each time she dons a mech suit, allowing her to decimate all enemies beyond recognition. Ripe with all sorts of evolving add-ons and technological marvels, Gato Roboto is an excellent choice for players interested in taking Wander‘s Zurk takes it to the next level.

Ōkami (HD) paints a divine picture

For players curious to experience the affairs of the world from a divinely guided perspective, Okami (HD) may be worth exploring. The game does more than just take players on a journey inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore, as its gameplay is inspired by The Legend of Zelda.

By taking on the role of a goddess named Amaterasu, who poses as a legendary white wolf, players will be able to relive an age-old tale and save the land from darkness. Although the story unfolds in a mostly linear fashion, OkamiGameplay blends action, platforming and puzzles while leveraging sumi-e inspired cel-shaded visuals to introduce the Celestial Brush, which stands at the forefront of combat and puzzle-solving sequences . Although the game does not necessarily look like Wander, Okami is sure to impress gamers with its unique style and tone.

Spirit of the North explores the roots of humanity

In accordance with the previous entry, The Spirit of the North takes players on an inspiring journey in which they take on the role of a lost fox. The game arguably most closely resembles Wander in terms of visual delivery and gameplay, especially since it’s up to players to figure out what happened to the unknown world the protagonist emerges into.

Generally, The Spirit of the North does not hold the player’s hand and allows them to freely explore their landmass after waking up with a mysterious power. Although the game does not contain any dialogue or narrative, it is full of environmental puzzles and breathtaking scenery reminiscent of Icelandic landscapes. Instead of a dystopian cyberpunk tale, players will find that most silent lore looks to pieces of Norse folklore for inspiration.

The tunic embraces the heart of adventure

Many critics believe Tunic and Wander are the best indie titles deserving of the “Game of the Year” award – and rightly so. Although it may be difficult to draw a direct comparison between Tunic‘the sand WanderThe strengths of both games at first glance are equally compelling in that they evoke a healthy dose of curiosity that draws its power from ingenious design.

Like another entry that sees players take on the role of a drifting fox, TunicThe isometric view of immerses wildlife lovers in a world plagued by dangers and long-forgotten mysteries. Its gameplay borrows heavily from The Legend of Zeldaas the anthropomorphic fox faces many obstacles and puzzles that can only be solved with the help of a sharp mind and correct skills. TunicThe cryptic language of, however, is the only gameplay addition that bridges the gap between the two animal-centric titles. Although it is just as difficult to translate as Wander‘s, it certainly offers a rewarding experience for those who go through the ordeal.

In a New York Times Saturday crossword puzzle, the clue “AJ ___________, author of ‘The Know-It-All’ was the answer’s greatest moment in life. That’s until having his brother-in-law point out to him that it was Saturday puzzle – the hardest of the week with the most obscure clues. So maybe it was not the greatest moment of AJ JACOBS‘ life, but it was still pretty cool and it rekindled his love of crossword puzzles.

This love turned into passion, not just for crosswords but all kinds of puzzles, and for the book THE PUZZLER: ONE MAN’S QUEST TO SOLVE THE MOST CONFLICT PUZZLES EVER, FROM CROSSWORDS TO JIGSAWS TO THE MEANING OF LIFE.

The author explores all kinds of puzzles starting with crosswords. From interviewing New York Times puzzle creator Peter Gordon to the surprisingly recent history of the form, Jacobs not only informs you but challenges you with crossword puzzles you can solve. The first wordcross (crossword), published in the New York World in 1913, is included. The puzzle quickly gained popularity and was picked up by numerous publications. However, the New York Times, now famous for its puzzles, considered the form too unscrupulous and frivolous to be published.

As with most puzzle forms explored, an appendix is included in the chapter with puzzles to try; the solutions are in the last part of the book. Also included are puzzles created for this title by Greg Pliska, founder of puzzle company Exaltation of Larks. Twenty puzzles are included and if you find the secret password in the introduction, you can unlock more puzzles at thepuzzlebook.com.

The Rubik’s Cube and its 43 trillion possible arrangements appeared much later than the crossword, in 1974. Jacobs’ parents bought him one, but he didn’t make more than one face. Determined to fill that gap in his puzzle resume, he spends a Saturday determined to finish and 41 years after his first attempt he completes the cube. Of course, Yusheng Du, who can complete the puzzle in 3.47 seconds, wouldn’t be impressed with Jacobs’ time.

Anagrams, rebuses and all sorts of puns are explored. Then, place to the puzzles. Jacobs admits he wasn’t a fan of this particular puzzle. During his research, he discovered that puzzle fans included Bill Gates, Queen Elizabeth II, and Hugh Jackman. He also found the World Puzzle Championship. It was to be held in Spain with 40 countries represented, one of which was not the United States Thinking it would surely be turned down, Jacobs filled out the entry form. Alas, a day later he was confirmed in the American team. Now he just needs three teammates and complete a puzzle.

He recruits his family and they start training. It’s satisfying to put pieces together and get that aha moment where things fit together – when chaos becomes order. On the day of the competition, they find themselves directed to one of the 86 tables containing four unique puzzles of 1,000 to 2,000 pieces. They have eight hours to complete the four puzzles. Goal of the United States team? Don’t finish last!

Mazes, math and logic puzzles force the author to solve puzzles that require you to think outside the box and sometimes reverse your thinking to find a solution. Then come ciphers and secret codes. Jacobs was allowed into CIA headquarters to see a famous unsolved puzzle – Kryptos. Jim Sanborn was commissioned to create a sculpture for the expanded headquarters in 1988. The corrugated copper wall contains a secret message. It’s been over 30 years, and Sanborn is still the only one with the solution.

Jacobs also covers visual puzzles (“Where’s Waldo”), Sudokus, KenKen and chess problems, which includes an entertaining interview with chess master Garry Kasparov. Its cover of Riddles begins with “Alice in Wonderland” as author Lewis Carroll was a huge fan. It tackles historical riddles and riddles in other works of literature, including the Exeter Book. Created by monks, the book is famous for having really naughty puzzles and having no answer keys.

Boxes of Japanese puzzles, riddles, treasure hunts – including the MIT Mystery Hunt – and endless puzzles complete Jacobs’ puzzle journey. With these aha! moments when a solution has been found or two pieces fit together, Jacobs discovered that we can all learn from solving puzzles.

This is a fun and informative read that you’ll find on the new non-fiction shelves in the lobby. Just a caveat – if you want to try to solve any of the puzzles, please make copies. We’re not one to deprive the next reader of their own aha! moment.

Cat lovers in particular are thrilled by the subtle, programmed ways that bring your playable cat character to life.

Developed by the French BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactivethe new video game Wander was released on July 19 in Japan for PlayStation 4, PlayStation, and PC. Since then, it’s generated quite the buzz among online Japanese game fans, so we were curious to see what excited everyone. Its basic premise is that as a cat, you must solve puzzles and interact with the environment to escape the abandoned walled city you’ve fallen into, while dodging robots and other futuristic threats with your drone companion. This unique combination of elements certainly looks intriguing and hard to fit in one box– unlike our favorite real-world cat companion with a penchant for squeezing into small spaces.

When you first start the game, the landscape evokes a slightly mystical and otherworldly feeling. There seems to be some kind of ruins among the overgrown vegetation, and everything is very fantastic and made to take your breath away.

▼ Welcome to this magical land of cats.

▼ You have become the protagonist of the tabby cat, seen from the perspective of the third person.

With a simple tap of your controller, you can make your cat character act in incredibly feline ways, including meowing and rubbing against other non-playable characters. As you travel the world, you can even meddle in other cats’ affairs, drink water, or sharpen your claws. These little additions are not there to advance the story but for pure pleasure. Who would ever want to leave this mystical paradise of cats?

▼ The little water paw prints are an adorable touch.

It seems we spoke too soon. Suddenly, you find yourself falling into some kind of dark, damp, smelly human ruins, all alone with an injured paw. You start walking through narrow alleys filled with dirty and crumbling buildings.

▼ Those lit up letters spelling out “HELP” don’t look ominous or anything…

From this point on, you must now search for clues and items that will eventually allow you to escape to your mystical world of cats, while escaping the enemies that are out to get you. While it’s possible to pass out, even those new to the game should be able to pick themselves up and find a way forward after just a few tries. We’ll leave the gist on that so as not to share any spoilers.

For the most part, you’ll advance along a specified path, but be sure to take your time so you can explore every nook and cranny to take in the dark and degenerate but also spellbinding visuals.

An interesting development fact is that the game’s aesthetic was directly inspired by the now demolished walled city of Kowloon in British Hong Kong, which the creators saw as the perfect environment for cats to use their agility and curious nature while exploring.

▼ Ghostly buildings are no problem for felines.

More than anything, we think you’ll be thrilled with your cat character’s snappy movements. You can back away in fear, scrape the doors you want to open, and even type a line of scrambled characters on a keyboard. If you don’t touch your controller for a while, your character will automatically perform certain moves while waiting. Plus, there are bonus “achievements” with fun names that you can unlock if you meet certain conditions, like one called “Even Cats Fall From Trees.”

▼ An instruction telling you to click the button if you want to meow

Stray has quickly gained a grateful fan base in the Japanese gaming scene since its release.. Cat owners in particular will notice all sorts of little ways you see your furry baby doing in real life. Some netizens have even reported that their pet cats react to on-screen sounds and movements while playing, with comments from happy gamers on Twitter including:

“Stray was even better than I expected. The world-building is so good, with the cat, cyberpunk, and post-apocalypse elements all done really well.
“I love the realism of how the cat suddenly decides to take a nap or starts scratching its claws on the walls or the floor, even though it has nothing to do with the story.”
“The game has a relaxed pace, but the story is surprisingly deep. And the cat is cute.
“Some people think this is purely a soothing game, but be sure to read the product description. It clearly mentions that there are grotesque parts and violence too.
“I don’t know if it’s a bug or not, but every time I play my watch desk takes over my real pet cats.”

Perhaps more than anything, according to our Japanese correspondent Saya Togashi, who conducted this test, people love games made with love. It’s evident while playing that the developers saw Stray as a true labor of love. The game is full of loving detail and they weren’t willing to compromise to achieve their vision of a game they themselves would want to play. Supposedly, they also used their own cats as research models, dubbing themselves “the team with more cats than creators.”

The full game is said to take around 6-7 hours, but searching for hidden objects and parallel moves will extend the playing time. Wander has a bit of everything to please everyone. Who knows – if the game’s popularity continues, maybe one day we’ll even get a musical or stage adaptation like the recently announced one. Final Fantasy X Kabuki game.

Whether it’s a survival horror title like the resident Evil series or an FPS like the BioShock series, almost every horror game has at least some puzzle game elements. But, some horror titles, like the recent Monochromatic Underwater Horror Game Silt, focus primarily on solving puzzles.

Instead of having puzzles as an additional element of the overall gaming experience, players experience these games for their challenging puzzles as well as the horror aspects. While it can be hard to imagine these games as scary, titles like We were here prove that puzzle games can be effective horror experiences.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Pit of Babel (2020)

A screenshot of a Rotter eating a Pissing Pissing in the game Pit of Babel

Co-created by Maceo bob MairPit of Babel is a surreal 2020 short indie game based on the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. In a dark world of sand that resembles human limbs, players must protect and feed small red creatures known as Rotters so they can be thrown into a strangely pulsing meat grinder. This reshapes creatures into Tetris blocks that the player must use to build a tower.

RELATED: 10 Best Indie Horror Games On Itch.io

As the tower is built, the player completes short snippets of stories written about two travelers who meet while trying to reach the place where the Tower of Babel once stood. Overall, this game offers a distinctly chilling experience that explores themes like individuality and whether sacrificing yourself for a unified structure is worth it.

Irisu Syndrome! (2008)

A screenshot of a first game screen in Irisu Syndrome!.

Years before popular meta-horror games such as Doki Doki Literature Club, the free game 2008 Irisu Syndrome! had already introduced the concept of a horror game that looked normal at first glance and played with computer files. Shapes of different colors fall from the top of the screen and players must shoot white squares to collide shapes of the same color before they reach the bottom of the screen.

As the player progresses through this simple yet challenging game, he slowly discovers the story of a university student named Kyouko Irisu and her three friends through files that appear on the player’s computer. Depending on the quality of the game, characters will live or die on a camping trip. While the experience isn’t as elaborate as modern examples, it’s still an efficient and historically significant game.

House (2020)

A screenshot of Tabby talking to the long-necked woman in the game House

Accommodation is a 2020 indie horror game and a remake of the original 2016 game of the same name, which was one of many unique Flash games. As a young girl named Tabby, the player is stuck in a time loop in a house that wants to kill her and her family. To save the family, Tabby races against time to find various things that can be used in puzzles around the deadly house.

Through the game’s multiple deaths and gruesome endings, the player slowly learns to solve the puzzles and backstory behind the cursed building. Earlier this year, the game received a major update that includes a new campaign where the player instead controls Tabby’s sister, Melody. With an eerie pixelated art style and unsettling music, Accommodation Perfectly combines environmental puzzles and a horrifying narrative.

Tamashii (2019)

A screenshot from the game Tamashii

Inspired by obscure Japanese games from the 90s, Tamashii is a 2019 platform game where the player explores a glitch-filled world as a being known as “Unnamed Soul”, which was created by an ancient god called the “Patriarch”. Since an evil force, known as the witch Feucirl, corrupts the sacred temple of the patriarch, the player must defeat the witch and secure the god’s legacy.

RELATED: 10 Best Obscure Games From The 90s

As the player navigates through the temple, they will have to solve puzzle rooms and win boss fights by creating clones of themselves to activate different types of switches. Scary retro aesthetics and challenging platform puzzles make this game an interesting experience for horror and puzzle fans.

We Were Here Series (2017–present)

A screenshot from the game We Were Here Forever

Starting with the 2017 free game of the same name, We were here is a series of cooperative puzzle games with horror elements. Although there is an overarching story, each game can be played alone and in any order. In each episode, both players are trapped in an abandoned medieval castle known as Castle Rock in Antarctica. To progress through the castle, they must work together to solve puzzles.

Since the players are separated and each has only half of the puzzles, they must communicate with each other using walkie-talkies. Because of this, part of the challenge comes from players having to convey what they see while solving the puzzles. The award-winning combination of spooky castle environments and cooperative escape room gameplay has led the series to have three sequels so far, including the 2022 title We were here forever.

A Rose in the Dusk (2017)

A scene from the video game A Rose in the Twilight

Developed by Nippon Ichi Software, A rose in the twilight is a scary puzzle platformer of 2017 for PS Vita and PC. The game follows a young princess named Rose who wakes up in the castle to find that the Curse of Thorns, which takes away time and color from things, has affected the entire castle, including herself.

Rose discovers that she can use her own bright red blood to restore color and time to objects. With the help of a friendly giant, Rose must solve puzzles to find out what happened to the castle and escape the dangers lurking there. Unlike the beautiful and cute art style, the game isn’t afraid to show Rose dying in horribly gruesome ways.

Cube Escape / Rusty Lake Series (2015–present)

A screenshot from the game Cube Escape: Paradox - Chapter 2

Beginning as a Flash series in 2015, the cube escape/ rusty lake franchise is an ongoing series of point-and-click adventure games inspired by twin peaks and other surreal horror masterpieces. Although each of the games features different settings and characters, they all center on a detective named Dale Vandermeer who investigates the death of Laura Vanderboom, which appears to be linked to magic cubes and a mysterious hotel known as the Rusty Lake.

This non-linear puzzle series currently consists of 15 main titles, all of which contribute to the complex narrative. There is also an official short film, Paradox – A Rusty Lake Movie. A 16th part entitled The past inside should be released this year.

Catherine (2011)

A screenshot from the game Catherine

Set in the same multiverse as the Megami Tensei franchise, Katherine is a surreal 2011 puzzle game centered on a failed journalist named Vincent Brooks. While afraid to commit to his longtime girlfriend Katherine, he begins having an affair with another woman named Catherine. At the same time, he begins to have supernatural nightmares where he and other men have to scale a ruined tower while being chased by demons.

RELATED: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Shin Megami Tensei Franchise

To reach the top, Vincent must rearrange the blocks before the tower falls under him, which will kill him in real life. This game and the extended re-release titled Catherine: Whole body, which includes a new love interest named Katherine, has a beautifully vibrant aesthetic, and explores mature themes that most games don’t.

Walk of the Year (2013)

A human-like horse in the game Year Walk

Based on an ancient Swedish divination ritual known as “Årsgång”, walk of the year is a 2013 adventure game about a man named Daniel Svensson who decides to use this ritual to see the future of his lover, Stina, after learning that she has been proposed. But, this ritual is incredibly dangerous, and he will have to solve various puzzles while encountering creatures from Swedish folklore.

While all of this is happening in the 19th century, a modern folklorist named Theodor Almsten learns of these events and tries to save Daniel from the consequences of his actions. With a beautiful storybook-like art style, walk of the year is a beautifully terrifying mystery that players will want to solve.

INSIDE (2016)

One of the best puzzle platformer games to date is still the 2016 game On the inside, who is a spiritual successor of Limbo. The game follows a young boy who lives in a dystopian society where an organization controls the minds of some humans using parasitic worms.

As he explores the organization’s facilities, he must solve environmental puzzles, avoid dangers and flee enemies. The game’s dark visuals help convey the horrifying realities of this world.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes was quick to apologize to the community following the Nationals’ early exit from the FIBA Asia Cup 2022 following a playoff loss to Japan playoffs for a quarter-final berth on Tuesday night.

Is Japan in favor of a weaker yen? https://playtsunami.com/is-japan-in-favor-of-a-weaker-yen/ Fri, 15 Jul 2022 14:55:15 +0000 https://playtsunami.com/is-japan-in-favor-of-a-weaker-yen/ The dollar yen hit a new 24-year high at 139.39 on Wednesday. • The dollar yen hit a new 24-year high at 139.39 on Wednesday.
  • US inflation and fears of recession propel the US dollar, the euro breaks parity.
  • Divergence between BOJ and Federal Reserve policies boosts USD/JPY.

The U.S. dollar continued its rampage in currency markets, hitting quarter-century highs against the yen and euro on Thursday.

US consumer inflation jumped to 9.1% in June, initially making a 100 basis point hike in fed funds a better bet than even in the Treasury futures market. Consumer spending was slightly higher than expected in June, although the difference, and more, is likely due to price inflation and not higher spending volumes. The apparent lack of a negative impact from inflation on consumer purchases pushed Treasury yields and the dollar lower on Friday and sent down the forward odds of a 100 basis point increase on July 27 unless by 30%.

Fears of a US and global recession in the second or third quarters kept security trading active and funds flowed into US assets and the dollar.

It is highly unusual to see US interest rates rise in an uncertain and fragile economy. Interest rates are normally countercyclical, rising when the economy overheats and falling when growth falters.

Friday’s release of US retail sales gave dollar bulls reason for slight profit taking after this week’s 2.1% run to Thursday’s high and 9.4% rise. % since May 30.

Next Wednesday’s Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate decision, or perhaps no decision is a better description, will contrast sharply with the Federal Reserve’s overactive policy. Whether the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) opts for an increase of 75 or 100 basis points, the sovereign rate spread should widen in the coming weeks. The BoJ’s dedication to its failed policy of accommodation is one of the great enigmas of modern economic and political policy.

Japanese industrial production for May has been revised down and has now fallen for three consecutive months. Capacity utilization fell 9.2% in May, its biggest drop since the first pandemic-related lockdowns. Initial jobless claims hit their highest level since February and are 46% above their low in April.

Along with the CPI and retail sales releases, producer prices rose 11.3% in June, from 10.9% in May, with core prices falling slightly to 8.2% from 8, 5%. Industrial production and capacity utilization were weaker than expected in May, although Michigan consumer confidence in July did not fall as expected.

USD/JPY Outlook

Even though the markets have largely assessed the policy divergence between the BoJ and the Fed, with the Japanese meeting this week and the Americans the next, rate policy will remain in focus until decisions are made. taken. Treasury futures reversed nearly 75% certainty that the Fed would choose the most aggressive 100 basis point hike at the start of the week, to the same percentage for a 75 basis point increase on Friday, but the impact on the market was nil.

Ahead of the last BoJ meeting, some comments from the Diet and an indirect reference from Governor Haruhikoo Kuroda to the impact of inflation on Japanese households seemed to suggest that a policy discussion was underway at the bank. Since then, Kuroda has warned that Japan faces “very great uncertainty” over the economic outlook and reiterated the BoJ’s willingness to accelerate stimulus measures to bolster the fragile recovery. The entire central banking world is moving towards higher interest rates. Has the BoJ decided that a weaker yen is the best option for a moribund Japanese economy?

Japanese information is limited to national CPI and trade data for June, which will not move markets. In the US, Existing Home Sales and S&P Global PMIs headline a limited release schedule.

With the Fed’s rate dominance restored to the big favourite, the outlook for USD/JPY is higher regardless of any interim profit taking. The base at 137.50 should remain untouched.

USD/JPY Technical Outlook

The negative crossover of the June 30 signal line with the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) price line did not signal a downtrend as it was easily negated by the strong fundamentals favoring the USD/ JPY. The signal line’s positive cross on Wednesday was supported by the relative strength index (RSI) touch on overbought status, but it does not signal an upward technical trend. Volatility in the Average True Range (ATR) has been declining for three weeks and Wednesday’s rise has not restored a broader outlook. Despite the favorable distribution of these indicators, the continuation of the upward trend of USD/JPY depends on fundamental and non-technical factors.
